U.S. retailer Walmart reduces certain chemicals of concern by 95% in consumer products; list of high priority chemicals to be disclosed soon

In an article published on April 27, 2016 by regulatory news provider Chemical Watch, editor Kelly Franklin reports on U.S. retailer Walmart’s announcement to have reduced chemicals of high concern by 95% (by weight) in certain products such as personal care, paper, cleaning, pet, and baby products. However, the list of Walmart’s “high priority chemicals” remains undisclosed (FPF reported), Franklin writes. According to Kevin Gardner, senior director of Walmart’s global responsibility communications, the company plans to release the list “in the coming months.” Further, all priority chemicals shall be disclosed on product packaging by January 2018. The non-profit organization Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) welcomed Walmart’s announcement, but also noted that “it is difficult to fully appreciate Walmart’s accomplishments, without knowing the names of these chemical targets.”
