ECHA proposes BPA for authorization

ECHA recommends 18 substances to be subject to authorization; list includes bisphenol A and other chemicals relevant for food contact materials; public consultation open until December 5, 2018

On September 5, 2018, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published its ninth recommendation of substances to be included in Annex XIV of REACH (Authorization List). The list features, among others, bisphenol A (BPA, CAS 80-05-7) and 2-ethylhexyl 10-ethyl-4,4-dioctyl-7-oxo-8-oxa-3,5-dithia-4-stannatetradecanoate (DOTE, CAS 15571-58-1). Both substances are included in in the Union List of substances authorized for use in plastic food contact materials (FCMs) (Annex I of Regulation (EU) No 10/2011), the ESCO working group list of non-plastic FCMs, and the FACET inventory of FCMs. Other recommended substances, potentially relevant for FCMs, are cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride and isomers (HHPA, CAS 85-42-7), hexahydromethylphthalic anhydride and isomers (MHHPA, CAS 25550-51-0), 2-methoxyethanol (CAS 109-86-4), and 2-ethoxyethanol (CAS 110-80-5).

A public consultation to provide comments on ECHA’s proposal is open until December 5, 2018.
