Recycling industry launches ‘RecyClass’ platform

Plastics Recyclers Europe introduces online tool ‘RecyClass’ to assess recyclability of plastic packaging, aims to combine knowledge of recyclers and packaging producers to improve packaging design for recycling

On May 31, 2018, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), the professional representative body of plastics recyclers in Europe, announced the launch of the RecyClass Platform, an “initiative aiming to provide specialized and dedicated guidance to those companies interested in increasing the recyclability of their plastics packaging.”

In January 2018, the European Commission (EC) published its EU strategy for plastics in a circular economy (FPF reported). Since then, several brands have committed to improving the recyclability of their packaging (FPF reported). “This initiative aims to close an existing gap between different industry actors and works towards bringing together the knowledge of recyclers and packaging producers,” PRE informed. “RecyClass is a free online tool for assessing the recyclability of a plastic package providing a ranking from A to F,” PRE further explained. “RecyClass also provides specific indications and recommendations on how to improve packaging design to fit current recycling technologies.”
