Colombia issues resolution on glass and ceramic FCMs

Technical regulation sets specific migration limits for lead and cadmium from glass and ceramic food contact materials (FCMs); provides guides on which products are within scope, limits vary with article type and size

As reported by SGS on October 26, 2021, the Colombian Ministry of Health and Social Protection has adopted a final technical regulation applying to glass and ceramic food contact materials (FCMs). It sets specific migration limits (SMLs) for the heavy metals lead and cadmium for both products manufactured and imported in Colombia, and testing is to be carried out only by nationally accredited laboratories. Different SMLs were set depending on the type and size of the food contact article. The regulation provides further guidance on which products are within the scope of the regulation (in the form of harmonized system (HS) codes) and establishes a set of exemptions for certain personal belongings and articles intended strictly for decorative use. Previously, Colombia had an emergency technical regulation in place to manage glass and ceramic FCMs (FPF reported).
