Ecuador to revise regulation on food contact ceramics

Notification to World Trade Organization (WTO) sets specific migration limits for cadmium and lead from ceramic articles; open for comments until August 6, 2020, set to come into force 6 months later

In an article published on July 28, 2020, SGS reported that Ecuador has announced a proposal to revise its regulation on food contact ceramics effective from the first quarter of 2021. The proposed revision of Ecuadorian Technical Regulation RTE UNEN 010 (2R) – ‘Ceramic Tableware Intended to Come into Contact with Food’ was notified to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on July 8, 2020. The proposal revises existing definitions, adds new definitions, and provides a table detailing specific migration limits for lead and cadmium from various ceramic articles. The proposal also sets a list of information that must be provided to meet labeling requirements as well as requirements for a conformity evaluation procedure. The proposed revisions are open for comments until August 6, 2020.
