Nepal’s street food packaging becoming healthier

Department of Food Technology and Quality Control in Nepal announces that newsprint will soon be banned as street food packaging to limit harmful chemicals in food

On May 2, 2023, Nepalese newspaper myRepublica reported that the country’s Department of Food Technology and Quality Control is planning to ban the use of newspaper as a packaging material for street food. The announcement came from the Director General of the department, Dr Matina Joshi Vaidhya, at a meeting in Kathmandu. According to the paper, the department is invoking the Food Act to make the regulation since “such papers [newsprint] contain chemicals that have a dangerous effect on health.”
