ECHA proposal restricting N,N-dimethylformamide

European Chemicals Agency committees support proposal to restrict use of substance both alone and in mixtures with concentration of 0.3% or greater; public consultation on socio-economic analysis to begin soon, proposal expected to be adopted in December 2019

In a press release published on September 24, 2019, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that the Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) and Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis (SEAC) have supported a restriction proposal that was submitted by Italy to limit the uses of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF; CAS 68-12-2). The restriction would apply to DMF either on its own or in mixtures at a concentration equal to or greater than 0.3%. A public consultation of the related SEAC draft opinion is reported to begin soon, and the committee would then adopt its opinion in December 2019. DMF is included in the FACET inventory of food contact chemicals.
