In an article published on April 21, 2017 news provider Plastics News Europe reported on disposable coffee cups made from bioplastic materials and developed by UK company Biome Bioplastics. According to the company’s news release, the bioplastic coffee cups and lids are “fully compostable and recyclable.” The biopolymers used are “based on natural and renewable resources including plant starches and tree by-products such as cellulose,” the company further informed. Paul Mines, CEO of Biome Bioplastics, stated that the bio-based takeaway cups are “disposable either in a paper recycling stream or food waste stream.” He further explained that “in appropriate composting conditions our cups and lids will disappear to carbon dioxide and water within three months.”
