Call to ban oxo-degradable plastics

Statement from Ellen MacArthur Foundation calls for global ban on oxo-degradable plastic packaging; signatories include major businesses, trade associations, NGOs, scientists and government representatives

On November 6, 2017, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Team published a statement urging for a global ban on oxo-degradable plastics. The statement claims that these plastics are not produced and sold in many countries. More importantly, there is evidence that oxo-degradable plastics do not safely biodegrade and can contribute to microplastic pollution. The statement is backed by over 150 organizations worldwide, including PepsiCo, Unilever, Greenpeace, as well as Members of the European Parliament.
