12th amendment to EU plastic FCM regulation

EU Regulation on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food amended; changes made to include three new substances and modify use and migration limits

On January 10, 2019, the European Commission (EC) published the 12th amendment to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. The EU had notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of the foreseen amendment in September 2018 (FPF reported).

The amendment follows through with the changes notified earlier, including the addition of three substances: Poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (CAS 147398-31-0), dimethyl carbonate (CAS 616-38-6), and isobutane (CAS 75-28-5). Other changes include modifying the conditions for use and migration limits for specific substances and setting food simulants to be used for testing of products based on acidity.

The amendment enters into force on January 31, 2019.
