The Consumer Monitor published in October 2024 by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), Berlin, demonstrates that “microplastics in foods” is perceived as a very concerning health issue by most consumers. 68% rated this topic as very concerning, and 16 % as medium concerning. With 62% and 52% considering “antibiotic resistance” and “residues of plant protection products in foods” as very concerning, these issues ranked second and third, respectively.
“Unintended substances in general” were rated as the greatest health risks for consumers (selected by 33%) followed by “plastics” (17%) and “additives” (12%).
The survey was conducted in August 2024 and included 1001 participants over 16 years of age who lived in Germany. The BfR Consumer Monitor is a representative survey of the population aiming for consumer health protection.
