Loop to promote reusable packaging

Loop concept aims to enable provision of common consumer goods in reusable packaging; pilot schemes to operate in selected U.S. and European regions in spring 2019

In an article published on January 24, 2019 by news provider Packaging Europe, reporters Tim Sykes and Libby White informed about Loop, a new “retail platform based on reusable packaging,” which was launched on the same day at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The concept is “challenging our reliance on single use packaging” and proposes instead “to send consumers products in customized, durable packaging, which is subsequently collected for reuse rather than recycling.”

The initiative is led by the U.S.-based recycling company TerraCycle and involves several major consumer goods companies, including Procter & Gamble, Unilever, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and Nestlé, who have developed reusable packages for some of their branded products to participate in the pilot operations. The pilots are expected to “launch this spring in France and north-eastern USA, with a subsequent roll-out across additional markets.”
