In January 2016 the EU project ToxRisk was launched. ToxRisk is an EU-funded (Horizon 2020) collaborative project including universities, research institutions, regulatory agencies, as well as large and small businesses with the ultimate goal “to deliver reliable, animal-free hazard and risk assessment of chemicals.” In the scope of the project, “advancements in cell biology, omics technologies, systems biology and computational modelling” will be integrated “to define the complex chains of events that link chemical exposure to toxic outcome.” ToxRisk is coordinated by Bob van de Water, professor of toxicology at Leiden University, the Netherlands, and intended to run for a six-year period.
