ECHA adds 8 chemicals to SVHC Candidate List

European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) updates the Candidate List for substances of very high concern (SVHCs); four out of eight new candidates are food contact chemicals: glutaral, medium-chain chlorinated paraffins, 1,4-dioxane, and 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde and its individual stereoisomers; 219 substances now on the SVHC Candidate List

On July 8, 2021, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced that eight new chemicals have been identified as substances of very high concern (SVHC) and added to the Candidate List for authorization under the REACH regulation. Four of the substances are food contact chemicals (FCCs) included in the Food Packaging Forum’s Food Contact Chemicals database (FCCdb): glutaral (CAS 111-30-8), medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (CAS 85535-85-9), 1,4-dioxane (CAS 123-91-1), and 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)propionaldehyde (CAS 80-54-6) and its individual stereoisomers (FPF reported).

With this addition, there are currently 219 SVHCs on the REACH Candidate List. The European Commission makes the final decision on whether included substances are eventually added into the REACH Authorization List (FPF reported).
