On July 23, 2024, the Food Packaging Forum (FPF) published a new resource providing an overview on bisphenols used in food contact materials. Which bisphenols have been measured in food contact, what is known about them, and regulations that cover them.
Bisphenols are a group of chemicals used in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. While much attention has been paid to bisphenol A (BPA, CAS 80-05-7), in the past decade public and regulatory concerns have begun to encompass the entire group of chemicals.
To reflect this change in perspective, FPF retired older resources that discussed only BPA and BPS (CAS 80-09-1) and replaced them with a single document reviewing information on multiple other bisphenols that have been detected in food contact materials, e.g., bisphenol F (BPF, CAS 620-92-8).
The bisphenols article is part of a series of background articles developed by FPF to give stakeholders a broad overview of important topics in the world of food contact materials and chemicals. Other examples from the catalog of background articles include: migration, the circular economy, ultra processed foods, and regrettable substitution & the precautionary principle.
