EFSA: Safety assessment of 2 PET recycling processes

EFSA’s CEF Panel considers post-consumer PET recycling processes 'Coveris' and 'ExtruPET' safe for contact with almost all types of foodstuffs

On July 14, 2015 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published two scientific opinions on the post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling processes ‘Coveris‘ and ‘ExtruPET‘. EFSA’s Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) concluded that the decontamination processes used in “Coveris” and “ExtruPET” can ensure that migration of potential unknown contaminants from the recycled PET into food does not exceed 0.1 µg/kg food. Thus, CEF considers recycled PET obtained from the two processes safe for use in materials and articles for contact with all types of foodstuffs for long-term storage at room temperature, with or without hotfill. Trays made of this PET should not be used in microwave and conventional ovens.
