EFSA considers co-monomer as safe for food contact

EFSA publishes scientific opinion on 1,4:3,6-dianhydrosorbitol

On June 7, 2013 the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published a scientific opinion in which it considers 1,4:3,6-dianhydrosorbitol (CAS 652-67-5) safe for food contact. 1,4:3,6-dianhydrosorbitol may be used as a co-monomer together with ethylene glycol and 1,4-bis(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexane at up to 40 diol mole % in the production of polyesters. All individual substances were previously evaluated by EFSA and considered safe for food contact. 1,4:3,6-dianhydrosorbitol (CAS 652-67-5) has a specific migration limit (SML) of 5 mg/kg food established by EFSA in 2007 (AFC 2007). The oligomeric substance was evaluated in accordance with regulation EC 1935/2004 and the modeled migration did not exceed the previously established SML of 5 mg 1,4:3,6-dianhydrosorbitol/kg food. The final product may be used for single and repeated contact with all types of food stuff at up to 100°C.
