Last week on March 25, 2013 PlasticsEurope filed a complaint with the European Commission’s Directorate General (DG) Enterprise and Industry in response to the French ban of BPA. PlasticsEurope argues that the ban is disruptive to the European internal market and against European laws. France adopted the ban on December 13, 2012 (Legal proposition N°49). The law bans BPA from all food contact materials intended for children below 3 since January 2013 and will ban BPA from all other food contact materials by January 2015. Under European law, BPA is currently authorized for plastic food contact materials other than infant feeding bottles. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is expected to publish a new scientific opinion on BPA informing European legislators by November 2013.
