On May 25, 2026, the Environmental Protection Authority of Ghana (EPA Ghana) announced a nationwide ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products, effective January 01, 2027.
The measure covers all expanded polystyrene (EPS) applications, including food contact materials (FCMs), such as takeaway containers, disposable cups and plates, and foam packaging used by restaurants, street food vendors, and hospitality operators. Other uses, such as insulation, mattresses, and cushioning materials, are also included. Exemptions apply to EPS products used for medical, scientific, laboratory, and diagnostic purposes.
EPA Ghana is requiring stakeholders across the supply chain to transition to “safer, reusable, recyclable, and environmentally sustainable alternatives” ahead of the deadline. Over the transition period, the authority plans to carry out stakeholder engagement, public awareness campaigns, and technical consultations, alongside strengthening compliance monitoring and enforcement capacity.
EPA Ghana is also encouraging consumers to adopt more sustainable consumption practices and shift toward environmentally friendly packaging options, framing the ban as part of broader national efforts to reduce plastic pollution and protect public health.
