In August and September 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added nine entries to its Inventory of Effective Food Contact Substance Notifications (FCNs). Substances include paper and polymer additives, machinery lubricant, as well as an antimicrobial agent for ice used to cool seafood. None of the newly approved substances are allowed to contact infant formula or human milk. Food contact substances within the inventory are approved for the described use in the food supply chain but only for the manufacturer or supplier specified in the notification.
The new substances are included with the following FCN numbers:
- 2149: alcohols, C16-18, ethoxylated (CAS 68439-49-6)
- 2161: hypochlorous acid (CAS 7790-92-3)
- 2147: styrene block polymer with 1,3-butadiene, hydrogenated (CAS 66070-58-4). Replaces FCN 2063
- 2160: 2-propenoic acid, polymer with sodium phosphinate (1:1), neutralized with calcium and sodium (CAS 2144395-83-3)
- 2158: quino[2,3-b]acridine-7,14-dione, 5,12-dihydro-2,9-dimethyl-, also known as 2,9-dimethylquinacridone and C.I. Pigment Red 122 (CAS 980-26-7)
- 2157: decanedioic acid, polymer with 2-ethyl-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol, isooctadecanoate (CAS 2294927-19-6)
- 2135: 1,4-butanediol-polytetramethylene glycol-dimethyl terephthalate block copolymer (CAS 106465-17-2), reaction products with maleic anhydride
- 2131: ethene, polymer with 2-propenenitrile and ethenylbenzene (CAS 106826-13-5), and methacrylic acid-2-[(tert-butylperoxycarbonyl)oxy]ethyl ester (CAS 41892-41-5)
- 2141: poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) (CAS 25805-17-8)
