On May 17, 2024, the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) published new standards for plastic film bags used in hot-storage, cold storage and the microwave.

According to reporting from The Nation, the new standard limits the use of heavy metals in any food contact plastic film bags. Additionally, those for hot foods “must be able to withstand temperatures up to 100 degrees Celsius, while bags for storing frozen foods must be able to withstand a temperature of minus-18 degrees.”

The Nation added that Industry Minister Pimphattra Wichaikul “also instructed the TISI to speed up the process to control other wares that could be used to contain foods or have direct contact with foods, such as plastic boxes or stainless lunch boxes.”

TISI also published a new standard for single-use wooden utensils in January 2024.
