On July 19, 2024, the Kenya Bureau of Standards informed the World Trade Organization of a new standard for aluminum foil for household use, including catering. This is the second edition of Kenya’s aluminum foil standard. The updates primarily pertain to the mechanical properties of the material.

Metal specifications remain the same between the original standard from 2011 and the update. Namely:

  • Aluminum must make up at least 98% of the foil
  • Copper, manganese, zinc must not exceed 0.1%; magnesium 0.05%; titanium 0.08%; Silicon + Iron 1.8%
  • Lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent- chromium must not exceed a combined total of 100ppm in aluminum foils for food packaging applications
