On August 27, 2019, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) agreed on the minutes of the 13th meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates, which was held on August 12, 2019, by phone conference.
During the meeting, the working group discussed revisions made specifically to the exposure part of EFSA’s draft risk assessment of five phthalates (FPF reported) following a public consultation. “Suggestions for addressing the remaining comments in the technical report of the public consultation were further elaborated and agreed,” and tasks were distributed to the experts to continue the revisions during the next meeting.
In the draft opinion published in February 2019 (FPF reported), EFSA established a group tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 50 µg/kg body weight (bw) per day for the four phthalates di-butylphthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), butylbenzylphthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7), and di-isononylphthalate (DINP, CAS 28553-12-0). The phthalate di-isodecylphthalate (DIDP, CAS 26761-40-0) was assigned its own TDI of 150 µg/kg bw per day.
The next WG meeting was scheduled to take place on August 29, 2019 for the toxicology subgroup, and the resulting meeting minutes should be published soon.
