Brazil transposed the Mercosur Resolution GMC 02/12, which contains a positive list of monomers, other starting substances and polymers for the manufacture of food contact plastics into national law. The Resolution RDC 56/2012 (pdf), adopted November 16, 2012, was also published in the Brazilian Official Journal. The positive list in the resolution contains both a monomers and other starting substances list based on the EU Regulation 10/2011 and a positive list of polymers based on Parts 175 and 177 of the U.S. Food and Drug Adminsitration’s Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21. The new resolution repeals two resolutions which previously regulated plastics materials including polymers and resins as well as determination methods for vinyl chloride monomers in polyvinyl chloride and styrene monomers in polystyrene.
