UK environment committee calls for bottle deposit system

Environmental Audit Committee of UK parliament demands nation-wide plastic bottle deposit return scheme, more access to free drinking water, increased packaging producer responsibility, and 50% recycled content in plastic bottles

In an article published on January 4, 2018, news provider Plastics News Europe (PNE) informed that the UK’s parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee has called for measures to reduce the country’s plastic pollution. The committee proposed the introduction of a national deposit return scheme for plastic bottles, increasing the number of public water fountains, and adopting a producer responsibility compliance fee structure making producers of packaging financially responsible for disposal and recycling. Further, the committee urged the UK government to request 50% recycled plastic content in plastic bottles, to be achieved by 2023.
