On June 8, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group on Food Contact Materials (WG-FCM). The 29th meeting of the WG-FCM was held on May 15-17, 2018 in Parma, Italy.

During the meeting, the WG-FCM discussed the draft opinions and noted changes for the substances FAVOR® PAC 600 Series, poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate (CAS 147398-31-0; regarding dry foods) (FPF reported), and Ln 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid (with Ln=La,Eu,Gd,Tb) (no CAS number available) (FPF reported). The draft opinions will be again discussed and possibly adopted by the CEF or future CEP Panel.

For the substances montmorillonite organic clay, poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate (CAS 147398-31-0; regarding all foods) (FPF reported), and di(m-2,2′,2”-nitrilotris(ethanol)-diperchlorato)dinatrium (CAS 156157-97-0) (FPF reported) the WG-FCM again requires additional information from the applicants to complete the risk assessments. Until submission of the requested information, the scientific evaluations are suspended.

Further, Bastiaan Schupp from the European Commission’s (EC) Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) informed the WG-FCM about “the status of the ongoing Roadmap initiative to evaluate the FCM legislation, and about ongoing work at the European Commission in the area of ceramics and recycling processes.” Also, EFSA’s SCER Unit presented the guidance on the risk assessment of substances in infant food (FPF reported).

“The next meeting date will be fixed once the new CEP Panel is established in July 2018,” the meeting minutes read.
