At seminar held by the Paper Technology Foundation (PTS) on February 11, 2014 in Munich, Germany, Erich Frank, director of the Technology Management – Regulatory Affairs department at the printing ink manufacturer Flint Group Germany GmbH, cautioned that the new German printing ink ordinance is not to be expected before mid-2016. The printing ink ordinance is to include a positive list of substances authorized for use in food contact printing inks. Substances not listed may not be detected in food. The use of carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic (CMR) substances in printing inks will be prohibited. Moreover, nanomaterials may not migrate into food. Further, the ordinance is to include the obligation pass information along the supply chain in the form of a declaration of conformity. Glass and metal packaging will be exempted from this obligation, due to their barrier properties.
