On April 8, 2019, the non-governmental organization Gallifrey Foundation published a set of infographics describing the life cycle of plastics and the risks posed to human health. As an organization focused on ocean conservation, the Foundation explained that they began investigating the effects of plastics and microplastics on fish and quickly became concerned about the bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants that bind with microplastics ingested along the food chain and endocrine disruptors that leach into food and drink. This led to the foundation “reframe[ing] a marine pollution issue as an urgent public health issue.”

The infographics visually depict chemical transport and exposures along the life cycle stages of extraction and transport, refining and manufacture, consumer use, and waste. The infographics are available for download in a number of layouts and file formats.
