On May 30, 2013 the California Senate rejected a proposed state wide ban of single use plastic bags. The vote failed to pass the 21 votes in favor threshold. Senator Padilla (California Democrats) put in a motion to reconsider the ban, which was granted with 38 votes in favor. The Senate Bill (SB) 405 will now be returned before the Senate for another vote; a date has not been scheduled yet.
SB 405 would ban single use plastic bags and imposed a tax on paper bags. Single use plastic bags are already banned under 75 Californian municipal and community laws.
