In an article published on April 5, 2017 the non-profit organization Foodwatch reported that the Dutch Food Safety Authority (NVWA) published a risk assessment regarding several savory waffle products that were recalled in Belgium and the Netherlands in March 2017 due to contamination with mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) (FPF reported). The NVWA took the affected products off the market but, at first, did not make the recall public. The Dutch authority now intends to make future risk assessments public and thus provide more to information to consumers and ensure transparency. Foodwatch welcomed this development. However, the organization expressed disappointment that the NVWA, in contrast to the Belgian authority, did not appeal to consumers not to eat the affected products, nor revealed the points of sale of the contaminated waffles.
